Healthcare technology stakeholders

Grenoble-Isère is one of the only places in Europe where truly cross-cutting multidisciplinary scientific research drives the development of new treatment solutions from drugs to medical systems. And the research community is part of a fully-integrated ecosystem that also encompasses education and industry.

Professionals from fields like medicine, biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics, information and communication technologies, and micro- and nanotechnologies come together in a way that makes the Grenoble area particularly fertile ground for medical research. Plus, close proximity to Lyon and St. Etienne, known for their biotech and healthcare tech R&D, further facilitates multidisciplinary collaboration—and puts the area well on its way to becoming one of Europe’s top-five centers for healthcare science and technology research and development.

With expertise in specialized fields like nuclear medicine and e-healthcare, Grenoble-Isère has a history of nurturing pioneering researchers:

  • Louis Néel, winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics (1970)
  • Dr. Alim-Louis Benabid, the neurosurgeon who invented deep brain stimulation (DBS) to treat Parkinson’s disease
  • Dr. Christian Brambilla, a Grenoble University Medical Center pulmonary specialist and CNRS/INSERM/UJF researcher who recently developed a new method for determining a cancer’s virulence
  • Dr. Philippe Cinquin, who pioneered computer-assisted surgery research, winning the CNRS innovation award in June 2013

Historically, Grenoble-Isère is known for a strong and particularly innovative manufacturing economy supported by leading national and international research centers.

The area’s end-to-end, fully-integrated healthcare industry is seeing growth in sectors like in vivo and in vitro diagnostics, drug delivery systems, biomedical informatics, IT for healthcare, medical imaging, surgical robotics, remote healthcare, and in-home healthcare.

Despite it’s relatively young status, Grenoble-Isère’s biotech industry has already spawned innovative start-ups and spin-offs from local research labs:

Healthcare technology

Grenoble-Isère already enjoys a position of leadership in the high-tech industries and is now making inroads into the healthcare technology industry—a global market that has seen constant growth over the past five decades.

Leaders from other industries involved in healthcare technologies

It is no surprise that Grenoble-Isère’s legendary innovation ecosystem has spurred companies with no former ties to the healthcare industry to get involved in developing tomorrow’s healthcare technologies:
