XRCE, Xerox Research Centre Europe

  • The center employs around 100 people representing 20 nationalities

Xerox Research Centre Europe, which turned 20 in 2014, is the European R&D branch of Xerox Innovation Group. Of the Xerox Innovation Group’s five global R&D centers, XRCE is the only one in Europe. Research at the center focuses on smart document technologies like text and image analysis. The center, which employs around 100 computer scientists, mathematicians, linguists, sociologists, and cognitive scientists from 20 countries, is internationally-renowned for its multidisciplinary, multilingual approach. Since it opened in 1993, the center has built close ties with the scientific and business communities both locally and internationally, participating in a broad range of collaborative projects and partnerships. The Grenoble-Isère Economic Development Agency (AEPI) provided XRCE with support in its move to Grenoble.

STMicroelectronics is Europe’s largest semiconductor manufacturer. The company employs 50,000 people in 31 countries around the globe and manufactures 3,000 different kinds of products, including integrated circuits, microprocessors, and components. STMicroelectronics’ main markets are telecommunications, consumer electronics, multimedia, automotive, IT, and manufacturing.

In France, the company has more than 6,500 employees at its Grenoble and Crolles sites. STMicroelectronics is a founding member and board member of the Minalogic competitive cluster and plays an active role in the local scientific and business communities.

Alstom Hydro France

Alstom Hydro France

Hydro turbine manufacturer Alstom Hydro France was founded in the early 20th century in Grenoble, the birthplace of hydropower. The company became a subsidiary of Alstom, under the name Alstom Power, in 1988. Today the company employs more than 800 people locally and elected to move its global hydroelectric technology center to Grenoble in 2013.

Alstom Hydro France is a member of the Tenerrdis energy cluster.

In vitro diagnostics leader bioMérieux designs, manufactures, and sells diagnostic systems that integrate instruments, biological reagents, and software.

The company’s Grenoble facility employs 200 people, two-thirds of whom are engineers or research scientists. The company has five business lines:

  • Molecular diagnostics for infectious diseases, human genetics, oncology, and industrial microbiological control
  • IT/bioinformatics
  • Quality assurance
  • Systems development
  • Project management

bioMérieux also has a second facility in Isère (Balme les Grottes), which employs nearly 350 people. This center focuses on bacteriology, instrumentation, and software R&D, and manufactures bacterial screening products.

bioMérieux is active in its partnerships with other biotech and pharmaceutical companies and research labs. The company is also one of the flagship members of biotech cluster Lyonbiopôle.

Global energy management specialist Schneider Electric has a number of plants and a major R&D center in Grenoble-Isère. The company’s innovation strategy is driven by major societal transformations and the need to find solutions to tomorrow’s energy challenges. Schneider Electric addresses new market segments like building energy efficiency, data centers, electric vehicles, and smart grids.

Since 2004 Schneider Electric has moved virtually all of its France-based R&D to the Grenoble area and the Grenoble R&D center now employs 2,000 people.
