STMicroelectronics to invest $1.1 billion in 2017

With a turnover of $6.97 billion in 2016, the French-Italian group, STMicroelectronics, reported a slight increase in turnover of 1.1% and a 58% increase in net profit ($165 million). In addition to presenting its annual results, the group highlighted that it planned to invest approximately $1-1.1 billion in 2017. Investments will be mostly directed towards front-end 300 mm chip production, and back-end testing and assembly for new products. The group’s factory in Crolles should be a primary beneficiary of these investments.

 

In addition, STMicroelectronics is expecting significant growth for its 2017 turnover thanks to new technologies and specialized products. The successful launch of a recent program should contribute heavily to increasing turnover in the second semester of 2017. According to Yole Développement, this latest contract will enable the group to supply Apple with cameras. Apple has in fact recently set up an R&D center in Grenoble. Finally, STMicroelectronics reported the successful delivery of one million STM32 microcontroller development kits and 100,000 kits for STM8 products. These kits enable a wide variety of configurations that can be adapt to many sectors such as wearables, industrial applications, energy and the automobile industry.
