The Grenoble-Isère Economic Development Agency is working side-by-side with local governments to see several major infrastructure projects through to completion.

GIANT, Grenoble Innovation for Advanced New Technologies

This €1.2-billion world-caliber innovation campus will ultimately bring together 30,000 researchers, students, and residents on a single site. Modelled after ecosystems like that of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, GIANT, a joint public-private initiative, is unique in France and will address the technologies expected to fuel major changes in our society. The campus is organized around three centers of expertise:

  • GreEN-ER for renewable energy and environmental issues
  • Nanobio for the life sciences and healthcare
  • MINATEC for information and communication technologies

  • 250 hectares
  • 200,000 sq. m of new research facilities
  • 100,000 sq. m of new university buildings
  • 10,000 researchers
  • 10,000 residents
  • 10,000 students
  • 10,000 manufacturing jobs

An industrial park that stands out for its groundbreaking practices in industrial ecology and multi-modal transportation infrastructures.

  • A 340-hectare site in the Rhône Valley, of which 160 hectares available
  • 40 minutes from Lyon and Valence
  • Multi-modal transportation infrastructure (river, rail, and road) 
  • The Rhône-Saône Basin’s second-largest rail terminal/river port
  • 900 jobs, mainly in manufacturing
  • Focus: environmental technology, renewable materials, smart utility networks, and high-tech chemicals

The Rhône-Alpes Regional Sustainable Development Program (GPRA) Northern Isère project

This far-reaching development project is spearheaded by:

  • The Rhône-Alpes regional government
  • Two intermunicipal bodies (Communauté d’Agglomération Porte de l’Isère – CAPI and Communauté de communes des Vallons de la Tour)

The project aims to make Northern Isère a major center for sustainable construction practices.

The Rhône-Alpes regional government is providing €8.3 million in funding for the project.

Northern Isère enjoys a strategic location between Lyon, Grenoble, and Chambéry and offers a number of advantages for the sustainable construction industry:

  • Home to global construction-industry leaders like Lafarge, Vicat, and Saint-Gobain
  • Substantial R&D activities, with 80% of France’s private-sector research in the field of building materials located in the area
  • Top-tier construction-industry education and training at institutions like Les Grands Ateliers
  • Active regional construction-industry networks like Pôle Innovations Constructives
  • A local history of city planning innovation to fuel the development of tomorrow’s sustainable cities
