Fostering cooperation: the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region goes to Shanghai and Beijing

The president of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, Laurent Wauquiez, led a delegation of  fifty companies, universities and local politicians to visit Shanghai and Beijing. The goal of the mission was to develop cooperation between Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and China in sectors related to digital or mountain activities. The AEPI helped highlight the many digital success stories that have grown out of Sino-French cooperation. Chinese company leaders and hedge fund managers met with regional actors. A seminar was held on the topic of how the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region can provide opportunities for Chinese investments in Europe. The seminar included the participation of Sitri and Soitec. The former is a Chinese microelectronics research center that collaborates with the LETI and will be opening a location in Grenoble-Isère. The latter is a French company in the semiconductor industry that recently opened its capital to Chinese investors.

In preparation for the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, the Cluster Montagne organized visits to Ispo and Alpitec China for regional actors in the mountain industry. Participants also met with local authorities in Hebei and the 2022 Winter Olympics organizing committee. The meetings enabled regional actors to confirm important partnerships.

POMA and the Chinese company, Beijing Raissun investment Co.ltd, signed a strategic contract to develop Thaiwoo, a ski resort that will host events for the 2022 Winter Olympics. POMA will be the sole supplier of ski lifts for the Thaiwoo Ski Resort (an investment of more than €200 million over the next five to ten years).

The MND Group won its bid to provide a turnkey solution for the new Snowland Ski Resort, located to the northwest of Beijing. The construction contract is valued at €110 million. It includes the construction of next generation ski lifts, snowmaking equipment, and equipment for security and signage.

Overall, approximately 15 agreements and contracts were signed during the region’s mission to China. The mission is part of a ten-year strategic plan to reinforce economic and academic cooperation between the Shanghai province and the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Another notable agreement was the renewal of a partnership between the Ruijin university hospital (4th hospital in Shanghai) and the Lyon and Grenoble university hospitals.
