Thanks to the Isère Office of the Auvergne-Rhônes-Alpes Entreprises Agency, the IUT entreprise club, the Fondation Université Grenoble Alpes, and the Grenoble University Space Center (UGA/Grenoble INP), sixty companies, university players and scientists met for a series of exchanges on the topic of Newspace.
Participants discussed the economic potential of space development for our economy and region.
Geneviève Fioraso and Mathieu Barthélemy demonstrated that the space sector is currently undergoing a major revolution. Geneviève Fioraso* is the president of the ESPI Scientific and Strategy Board (European Space Policy Institute) based in Vienna as well as an former-Minister of Higher Education and Research. Mathieu Barthélemy is the director of the Grenoble University Space Center.
Throughout the world, space is becoming more accessible and new actors are emerging. Potential applications are also developing thanks to space data collection, which continues to increase in terms of communications, geolocalization, meteorology and risk prevention.
Our regional players have an opportunity in terms of the miniaturization of space equipment and space data analysis. Grenoble and its surrounding region have already demonstrated their strength in terms of components, instrumentation and data experimentation.
As a result, the discussions led to the common goal of organizing a regional space sector that would help meet needs in terms of funding, technology demonstrators, exchanges and collaboration. This is why, with the support of the Auvergne Rhone Alpes region, we will create a booster dedicated to spatial in the Region.
(*) Geneviève Fioraso was in charge of a report on the emerging opportunities of the space sector (“Open Space, l’ouverture comme réponse aux défis du secteur spatial”), which was delivered to Manuel Valls in July 2016.
