An international team of scientists revealed a new type of semi-aquatic predator related to Velociraptor. The discovery comes from an exceptionally well preserved dinosaur skeleton extracted from a site in Mongolia.
Thanks to techniques developed at the ESRF, detailed 3D analysis enabled scientists to study this new and surprising predator called Halszkaraptor escuilliei. The small bird-like dinosaur lived in Mongolia during the Campanian stage of the Cretaceous, approximately 75 million years ago. The study not only reveals a new genus and species of dinosaur, but also an amphibious lifestyle that was unexpected for raptorial dinosaurs.
