Research, teaching and innovation, such are the strongpoints of the Grenoble-Isère economic growth model. Key players in research, training, enterprise and the local authorities work hand-in-hand, their goal being to achieve, together, lasting economic development that is innovative, dynamic and sustainable.
Grenoble-Isère has extended and enhanced its scientific skills by fostering close links between industry, research and training, rooted in dialogue, the addition of knowledge and the complementary nature of skills.
Minatec
, officially opened in 2006, is an example of what this model can achieve. The centre, which specializes in micro and nanotechnology, brings together on its campus an engineering school, a cutting-edge research centre and a high-voltage industrial breeding ground.
On the strength of this success story, more innovation clusters have been launched, specializing in biotechnology and new energy technologies.
With 23,400 jobs Grenoble-Isère is France’s top centre for public and private research outside the Paris area. A steady flow of substantial government and European funding has boosted the area’s world-class scientific vocation, in both its traditional centres of excellence – mathematics, physics, nuclear power, electronics, computer science and magnetism – and in disciplines now developing fast in Grenoble-Isère such as life science and micro and nanotechnology.
With 64,700 students Grenoble hosts France’s third largest student population. 1 of 5 Grenoble's inhabitant is a student. Grenoble University makes a key contribution to the quality of the local talent pool. Focusing a substantial part of its efforts on vocational training, the university adapts its courses to suit the demands of research and industry. Grenoble’s resolutely cosmopolitan academic scene opens onto the world as shown by the figure: 45% of students preparing a PhD are foreigners.
Thanks to its dynamism, scientific and technological expertise, efficiency, economic cooperation and cosmopolitan outlook, Grenoble-Isère boasts a dense fabric of firms, characterized by large corporations working hand-in-hand with small and medium-sized enterprises, by the presence of a large contingent of foreign companies and a remarkable diversity of sectors.
